I made this box as part of my sister's Christmas present - New Jersey in a box. It was quite an undertaking.

The top. The hole in the middle is actually a clear piece of plastic, and the "NEW JERSEY" lettering is inspired by a font from the cover of a Bon Jovi album. And of course, lots of tomatoes!

Here are two signs familiar to anyone who's ever passed through the Garden State - signs for the Turnpike and Parkway.

Goin' "down the shore." The boardwalk is composed of lots of individual pieces of paper to represent boards, the roller coaster is a sticker, and the sand is sandpaper.

Two of NJ's most famous musical exports, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, with an iconic guitar representing each. The guitars were the most involved part of the whole box, but they are definitely my favorite. The one on the left is inspired by one that Bon Jovi's guitarist Richie Sambora used in the 80s and the one on the right is an attempt to replicate (dents and all) the guitar that Bruce Springsteen is holding on the "Born To Run" album cover.

Zach Braff, with a line from his Saturday Night Live monologue last year (in which he extolled the virtues of New Jersey)... and more tomatoes!

Finally, the inside, which is lined with an old NJ road map.

I've got some x-acto knife and hot glue gun battle scars, but it was worth it because she absolutely loved it.

AHHH!!!  i love love love this, it makes me miss living in Jersey... when i was little I was really confused about the Jersey State Parkway sign, I didn't realize that the image was the state on NJ, i thought the top part was a homeless person and the bottom part was an amish lady...

wow, that makes me sound like a nut. but i was only 6 or 7 so I didn't know how the state really looked! great job!

Best episode of 'Cops' ever made:
officer- "ma'am why do you have scissors in your pocket?"
drunk lady- "for arts, such as.... crafts?"

Wow!  I lived in Highlands, NJ for about a year and this has just made me totally homesick for it!
