i was browsing the free people site and came across this super cute hat.
http://www.freepeople.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/products.detail/productID/618f0213-7bf1-4fc4-82e9-8d20058551a7/categoryID/3fc71ccc-7267-43f9-9905-d3ac296fb774
maybe in 2 subtler colors.
do you have any ideas how to make it?

i think this is the stitch, which is really shell stitch and reverse shell stitches. I can't zoom in to the picture but it looks like it to me

Ok so I started making the swatch and it's looking a lot like what you wanted, the only thing I'm not sure of is how many stitches we're going to need to do the pattern. Arrr! I'll figure something out. If anyone wants to jump in on this, go ahead but I will try to figure something out.

I figured out how to start it but once i do the first two rows of shells, I'm not sure how to increase it to make it floppy-ish like the pic.
This is what I've got so far:
chain 5, join to end to form loop
chain 2, dc 13 times in loop (14 sts)
chain 2, 2 dc in each dc (28 sts)
chain 2, dc in same sitch, dc in next dc, 2 dc
Chain 2, 3 dc in same stitch (beg half shell made), skip next 2 dcs, sc in next dc, *skip next 2 dc, 7 dc in next dc (Shell made), skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, rep from * to last 3 dc, skip next 2 dc, 3 dc in last dc (Half Shell made); join to top of first chain 2.
Chain 1, sc, chain 3, Reverse Shell: Keeping last loop of each dc on hook (dc in same dc as last st made, dc in each of next 3 dc, dc in next sc, dc in next 4 dc) yo and draw yarn through all 10 loops on hook, ch 1.ch 3, sc in same st as last dc made, rep from * across to last shell, ch 3, keeping last loop of each dc on hook (dc in same dc as last sc made, dc in next 7 sts, dc in 2nd ch of t-ch) yo and draw yarn through all 10 loops on hook, ch 1, pull tight (End Reverse Shell made), ch 3, sc in same ch as last dc made.

That's what i thought at first but im not sure. Maybe I should have kept at it and finished it and THEN made corrections because It was starting to look like it would end up too tight but I dont know I didnt finish it. Maybe I should do that before I freak out lol And maybe your right, maybe I should go another round of dcs OR replace DCs with trebles. I think I'll experiment some more when i have some time tonight.
