THe typical Pattern companies (Simplicity, McCalls, Butterick) have (or atleast typically have, I haven't looked at the newest pattern books) lots of different patterns that fit your description, so your best bet might be to browse the pattern catelogues for ideas.

Here are a few ideas:

Simplicity 3742 - pretty drawstring style neckline
S 3777 - tank style plain or gathered bodice
S 3831 - V neck
S 3867 - another V neck with a very full pleated skirt

New Look 6749 - several options for straps or off the shoulder sleeves
NL 6750 - mix and match bodice and skirt styles
NL 6699 - another one with tons of mix and match options

McCall 5595 - cute gathered knit dress
M 5313 - bonus, that jumper style that's so in right now really looks best on smaller busted women!
M 5039 - I love this dress!  I was going to make it for our 1st wedding anniversary but ran out of time...maybe for our 2nd.. Smiley

Butterick 5130 - similar to McCall 5595, but it has some extra rows of elastic that create a cool effect

Vogue 2940 - so pretty and feminine

Are any of those looking good?

i have some horrible stories about shopping for a winter formal we have at our school. (my mother went up to the customer service desk and said, "where coiuld i find a formal dress for my daughter" and pointed to me. the customer service lady said "i think u should be looking in the CHILDREN'S department". she then looked at me like i was four. so we went ot the childrens department, only the kind of dresses they had were the high waisted poofy skirt ones typical childrens holiday dresses. also my friends were traipsing aroudn a mall for about 16 horus looking for a dress, but h&m has my size so i got one from there)
