Are there any baby patterns out there that would be quick and simple enough for a first-time knitter to churn out?  I want the first thing I knit to be useful.  Grin

I made this hoodie for my niece for her first birthday -- my first sweater (actually my first non-scarf/mitten/hat).  It was actually pretty easy, until I had to piece it together.  So I just winged it, and it seems to have worked out okay since she's been able to wear it (yay!).  It only took about a week to make and put together.

I enjoy making knit baby hats using hat looms.  You can find them at Michael's - a set of different sizes (including adult) called "knifty knitters".  You can also get nice wooden ones online. They are really easy to use and you can make a hat in a day.   Grin  My son wears his almost every day - whenever we go out for walks, etc.

teeheehee! those is my booties! but...im afraid they are NOT suitable for a first time knitter. short row shaping and all.
I think a terrific idea is to make a lovie sized blanket in basic garter stitch.say, about 2 feet square. You could get some really soft fluffy baby yarn (which is thick) and have it knit up in no time. Use big needles, like...`15's or 17's

I love that hooded sweater! I'm attempting to start knitting for my baby which is due in July. So far i have cast on and unpicked it 12 times. I just want to be able to finish ONE THING!

i think this looks like the easiest knit baby gift of all time, and it's really cute & useful.  if you're worried about the part where you cast off most of the row and then continue to knit the strap, knit it in two separate pieces (a square big and a long rectangular strap) and then stitch together.  i can't wait to try it myself!
