Maybe because I started sewing with quilting, but cutting straight I can do (bless whoever invented the see-through quilting ruler).

Sewing straight, on the other hand...Seams I can manage, but for some reason my topstitching is always all over the place!

Since you mention quilting, I'll ask. Do you try to top stitch with your quarter inch foot? I used to but the normal foot holds the seam flatter for top stitching. The quarter inch foot tends to slide down the 'hill' created by the seam allowance and wanders everywhere.
