These were a Christmas present for my sister. They were also an excuse to try and come up with my own pattern. So this is my first attempt at pattern writing!
These would be great for a beginner sock knitter or someone more advanced that wants uncomplicated patterns. The stitch pattern is easily memorized and intuitive requiring nothing more than simple knits and purls to create a fun diamond pattern.

Yarn: Dream in Color, Squishy, color: wisterious, 1 skein
Needles: us 2, 2.75 mm clover bamboo dpns
these socks were made to fit a larger than average foot and a slightly larger than average calf/ankle circumference. These socks could easily be made smaller by switching to a smaller needle size or decreasing the co amount by a multiple of 6
Diamond pattern, worked over 6 stitches
Row1: K K K P K K
Row2: K all stitches
Row3: K K P K P K
Row4: K all stitches
Row5: K P K K K P
Row6: K all stitches
Row7: P K K K K K
Row8: K all stitches
Row9: K P K K K P
Row10: K all stitches
Row11: K K P K P K

CO 72 stitches across 4 needles, 18 stitches per needle. join to begin working in the round. work in 3x3 rib for 1 inch, after ribbing has been worked begin diamond pattern working the 6 stitch repeat across all 72 stitches. Work diamond pattern for 4 inches or until desired length for the leg has been reached.
Heel: I used a short row heel worked across half of the stitches. I followed these directions here:
http://www.cosmicpluto.com/blog/?p=585Foot*: After completing the heel, pick up 4 stitches between needle 1 and needle 2 and then pick up 5 stitches between needle 3 and needle 4. The odd stitch will go onto needle 3. This is so that when the diamond pattern is worked over only the top of the foot it will become symmetrical, to do this you need to work the diamond pattern over the 37 foot stitches ending with stitch 1 from the repeat. Decrease the 8 extra stitches, 4 on each side, out over the first 8 rounds of the foot. Round 1: work across needle 1 to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1, work across needle 2 and 3 in pattern, needle 4: k1, ssk, k to end. Round 2: k all stitches, repeat those rounds until you have 36 stitches on needle 1 and 4.
*the diamond pattern is worked only across the top of the sock, stockinette is worked across the instep
Work foot in pattern until you are 2 inches shy of your foot length. End on a K only row.
Toe:
Round 1: K across needle 1, across needle 2, across needle 3 until last 3 stitches, ssk, k1, k across needle 4, this gets rid of the extra stitch on needle 3 that made the diamond pattern symmetrical.
Round 2: K to last 3 sts on needle 1, k2tog, k1, needle 2: k1, ssk, k to end, needle 3: k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1, needle 4: k1, ssk, k to end
Round 3: k all stitches
Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until you have 28 stitches remaining. Graft the live stitches together and weave in ends!
