Hey all,
For my cosplay at the Detour this year I'm making what is essentially your basic Japanese schoolgirl uniform, which is turning out to be a fun little challenge. I freehanded the skirt and some wristbands that I need, but I'm stuck on one of the more major parts of the stereotypical schoolgirl costume, mostly because I have no idea what it's called.

What I'm stuck on is the little thing she [Tokiko] wears over where her collar would be. Does anyone know what it's called and where I could find a pattern for it? Since I don't think people will be looking too closely at my skirt and such I'm not too afraid to work patternless, but I really don't want to screw this one up.

Also, does anyone know of a pattern/instructions for making knee-high socks? I figured I would just go out and buy them, but if I have enough fabric left over, I'd prefer to make them.

Thanks so much for all the help!

I think that kind of top (which the collar is a piece of) is called a "middy blouse".

Good luck with your project!

Are you talking about the actual sailor collar? Sorry, kind of stupid about these questions. (I run the cosplay competition at Anime Festival Wichita, so I think it's awesome you're doing this!)

If that's what you're referring to, there's a tut on http://www.lynleigh.com/cosplay/ if you click "tutorials" then scroll to the sailor collar.

The socks I'm not sure how to help you with, but I know one of my cosplayers when she needed a weird orangey color of knee socks that she couldn't find locally bought tights in white, dyed them, then cut them off and sewed the top. (Tights, now, not pantyhose.)

Is that costume from Busou Renkin, I think it's called? I haven't actually seen it but I know some people cosplaying from it.

Ohmigod, thank you SO MUCH for that link. Yes, that's *exactly* what I wanted! I'm going to sit down and make it tomorrow after class! Cheesy
The costume is from Busou Renkin! Smiley I'm going as Tokiko, and the boyfriend's going as Kazuki. We're actually going to *make* our busou renkins, which (if it works out) is going to be totally intense. It's actually my first-ever cosplay, so I'm really excited and already planning costumes for next year (one thought is Yuki Nagato from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya). I really don't know why I didn't get into this sooner - I mean, anime AND crafting? Sweet.
Thanks again!

Midshipman sailors wear this collar, thus Middy blouse. The orange sash is separate.

Glad I could help. My five year old wanted to be Sailor Chibi-Moon for last year's cosplay, so I had that link somewhere. (She ended up being Tinker Bell from KH.)

I should totally wear that to the next Anime club. Now, if I could only get my wigs back from Angel, I'd get more bishy points.... :3
