I don't know about anybody else, but before I even cut into my coffee filter, I grab my kids' watercolour paints. I use a darker shade around the edge of the filter and gradually lighten the colour as I move into the center. Let it dry and then start making your rose. I've done it the other way as well (darker in the center) but I wasn't quite as happy.
