This year for Christmas, I decided that I was going to try and do handmade gifts for everyone on my list. Early on I decided that I was going to make my boyfriend a companion cube from the game Portal, since he's been obsessed with it since the day it came out. The problem was that I had no idea what craft medium I was going to use. Suddenly, it came to me, crochet! I spend most of my time crocheting anyhow, so I found a pixelated design and went from there.

Honestly, I will never ever make one of these again, it was so tedious to change colours so often I think my hands will be recovering for months. But the look on his face when I give it to him will be priceless.

So, here it is, I've been working on it forever, and it's finally done. I made this with tapestry crochet. All the yarn is just plain old acrylic. I used a pixelated design that  I found here : http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=213040.0
Here it is! Hanging out with his gift to me, an awesome mushroom!

Holy portal!  I was so worried that this post wasn't going to be about a weighted companion cube.....but then it was!  Great work  Cheesy  If only I had patience like you, I would make that for my hubby's birthday...

So very much patience! I would recommend doing them as pot holders or something along those lines. Doing this six times over was far more work than I anticipated.

I'm wishing that I had done this in felt now too, especially after seeing some of the beautiful plushies that are out there.

The key to colour changes is to finish the last stitch with the new colour, makes it look awesome every time Smiley
