I just got engaged on Christmas Eve.  Grin

I don't want a wedding or ceremony of any sort, but my finace insists.  Therefore, I need some pointers.

We're thinking of getting married at the Butterfly Pavillion in Colorado (it's this really cool "bug museum" with live bugs, and the butterflies roam free in this huge rainforest environment.  You can get married in the rainforest with the butterflies!)

Here's what I need help with:
Colors.  It's a winter wedding.  I want to do red and black.  Too goth?  Would pink, black, and white be more butterfly appropriate?

Favors.  I want butterfly themed favors, but I'm not sure how to pull it off.  Suggestions, please?

Dress.  I'm not sure I want a traditional wedding dress.  I'm also a little put-off by the idea of a white dress (or off-whte, or ivory, etc.)  I have fat arms and funky shoulders, and most of what I'm finding (whether it be a wedding dress or not) is either sleeveless or sleeveless strapless.  Gross.  Anyone have websites I can go to, or a local seamstress (I'm in the Denver, CO area) I can go to and have one designed?

Thanks for reading!

first, congrats on getting engaged! and second you are so lucky if you can get married in the rainforest with butterflies and bugs!

my colors are red and black, so no I dont think its too 'goth' but I do think a really vibrant pink and black would go nicely with the butterfly theme.

as for favors I'm not doing that unless its food related... so I'm no help there.

Dress. I am not not not going to wear white. I'm making my dress and it will be red. as for the sleeveless/strapless thing goes I know what you mean. but dont worry about fat arms or funky shoulders. someone proposed to you and that means they think you are the best and most beautiful person on the planet. find a dress you like (regardless of sleeve type) and find a cute little bolero or wrap. if that doesnt appeal go for an antique look. old dresses always have sleeves and get it altered. hope that helps! good luck!

it is not inertia alone that is responsible for human relationships repeating themselves, monotonous and un-renewed, it is shyness before all else.

My colors were deep red wine (dark red), black & white.  I don't think it's the colors that determine if the feel is "goth" or not.  It's the design sense in which you use them.  We used our colors in a romantic and classic feel.  I think you could definitely do red & black with the butterflies, if you wanted.  After all, look... I even put the flowergirl in red, but made sure she was happy & frilly, too Cheesy http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l156/sweets4ever48/WeddingPhotosByJen/IMG_9761-1.jpg

Hmm...butterfly favors I'll have to think about.  Nothing comes immediately to mind.  Do you have a pricepoint per piece or an estimated number of guests?

Don't limit yourself to looking at typical wedding dresses.  If you look away from typical wedding dresses (David's Bridal, for example), you will generally pay less money, too! Smiley

CONGRATS to you!

I think black and red is fun.  As i've been searching for wedding ideas i came across another post here that mentions offbeatbride.com in one of the comments (i'm not sure which now  Huh) and they have TONS of cool weddings with black and red.

Did you want to make favors or buy favors?

I also am not wearing a traditional wedding dress.  I am wearing a brown bridesmaids dress, the price was so much better than a traditional wedding dress and it is so much more my style. I like the bolero or wrap idea.  You could even do a cute sweater and maybe even add butterfly embellishments to it.

Thanks for the suggestions and congratulations!  I'm really excited to get married to my fiance- he's the best guy ever.

I was thinking of putting butterflies on the veil.

I'll have to check out brides maids and possibly prom dresses to see if there's something I like.

I want to make my favors and invitations.  Have you guys seen those little tins with the clear screw-on lids?  I thought those would be cool with those custom m&m's in them and maybe a butterfly hot glued to the top.  What do you think?

Congrats amygurl55.  For my wedding we ordered the "wrapping paper" sheets from: http://www.plantablepaper.com/wrap.htm

My favors were butterfly cut outs from that colorful plantable paper company.  I bought the "wrapping paper sheets b/c you get the most bang for your buck.  I bought a butterfly cookie cutter, traced a million of them in two diff color patterns, then attached them to a lil hand written note.

For dresses (just ideas, since I know "wedding dresses" aren't appealing to you), try http://eternitystore.com (go to the last page and work backwards, all the new styles are in the back for some reason), or http://latterdaybride.com. Those are some pretty good sites. My dress is Maggie Sottero Grace Kelly (you can search it on her site), which does have sleeves. They are hard to find, I know, but they are out there!

You could get a bridesmaid's dress instead, and have color, or hit up thrift stores for something funkier. Good luck!

I think black, pink, and white could work. Black, orange, and white would be cute too...kind of monarchy. Not sure if it would look too Halloweeny though. Also black, electricky blue and white would be butterflyish as well. Sounds like a beautiful place to get married at. Congratulations!

OK, so we can't get married at the Butterfly Pavillion.  They don't allow weddings during normal business hours, so we'd have to get married before 9am or after 5pm.  That's all fine and dandy if we were getting married in the summer.  Let me explain- the conservatory is where the wedding would take place.  The conservatory is naturally lit- there are no inside lights.  We're getting married in January.  It's dark at 5.  Darn.

So we're looking for other options right now.  All these wedding books and magazines say to book the place a year in advance, so we're trying to get that done.

I'm thinking that now a butterfly themed wedding is going to be silly in the middle of January seeing as how we're not getting married around butterflies.  Do we need a theme?  I'm not sure what else I'd do...

My future MIL offered to make my dress and I took her up on it.  I want it to be either pink or silver (not shiney street-walker silver; matte satin silver). (here's the pattern: http://www.burdamode.com/Bridal_wear,1270778-1128998-1005430-1157064,enEN.html)  So my colors will most likely be pink, black, and white or silver and black.

If you took time to read this really long post, thank you.  Your comments and ideas are appreciated.

You don't need a theme, but if you still wanted to do butterflies, I think it would be really pretty as an icy or sparkly butterfly theme (or you can come to Columbus, Ohio and get married in our butterfly conservatory Cheesy).  Not-cheesy-overdone butterflies, but subtle touches would be lovely.  Hmm...I can picture it in my head, but it's not coming out in text. Cheesy

Wow, that dress will be beautiful in matte silver!

As great at it would be to go to Ohio....

We were thinking about going to a Victorian house at a place here called Heritage Square (http://www.heritagesquare.info/addressgrab.php?addy=http://www.victorianhouseonline.net)

What could I do for favors if we get married here?  I'm a crafty type person, but I'm having trouble coming up with favors.

Probably irrelevant but I used to live in Arvada, and that Butterfly Pavilion is one of my favorite memories from when I was six! I hope you have a gorgeous and happy wedding there Smiley

I do not know if this link will work or not, but I saw this pretty butterfly paper lantern decoration and thought of your wedding plans.

Those are pretty! Smiley

But unfortunatly, my after thought was it looked like they were huge white bug-zappers for butterflies, lol  Cheesy

Regardless of that, they are super cute!

like those pretty orange and black ones

OMG!! I have that same dress pattern in my 'wedding ideas' file  Cheesy! Isn't it just gorgeous?!

I love the idea of the butterfly theme and those paper lanterns are beautiful. I bet a regular garden wedding with butterfly accents would be lovely.

Congrats and good luck!

How about more of a 'natural' theme in general? You could use those plantable papers in tiny decorated pots with butterflies. You could have greens with the pinks and whites.
I think winter is a beautiful time for a natural theme. Snowy natural perhaps?
I don't like the idea of themes, per say, but it helps to have something in mind while you're planning.
