i'm going to start embroidering my first project but don't know how many strands to use...all 6 or 3? how many do you guys typically use?

I use 2 and on occasion 3 if I want it to be bulky and 1 strand for faces and fine detail.  Hope that helps.

what about embroidering onto felt? does that change things?

When I embroider on felt I still use the same amount of threads. I do not find it changes that much.  But then it is all a personal preference on what you want it to look like.  I would not stress to much about it if you like it that is all that matters.

sorry, but you're gonna have to wait a little while. its very very small but i'm doing it for a swap and it'll be a month before sendouts. i don't want my partner to see what i made them!

I've been using 3-4 (I'm a total newbie), but my mom found some of my great grandmas and she was only using 1-2, it looked much better than what I was doing her details were a lot clearer.
