"Stressed" is "desserts" spelled backwards.

Since I saw the "Radical Knitting and Subversive Crochet" exhibit in NYC last February, I'd been wanting to try to knit portraits.

With my Mom's SO's birthday coming up, DH had the perfect idea - why not knit a portrait of Johnny Cash?

So I made a gauge swatch, prepared graph paper according to the gauge, photoshopped a photo of The Man, copied it onto a chart, and charted the words (from "Sam Hall") and got to work.

The colorwork is a combination between stranded and intarsia - since it's going to be mounted on a piece of felt backing I didn't really care about the appearance of the WS.
I'm two weeks late with it. Knitting through having two sick kids and no sleep at night, to name a few, does not go particularly fast...

Anyhoo, I'm really proud of myself for this, and now just have to be willing to part with it and give it to its rightful owner...

Well, "My name is Sue, how do you do? Now you're gonna die!" would have taken up too much space...  Tongue

Thanks for the responses everyone!

utterly ace.
how are you going to present it? framed would suit how amazing it is, but i guess glass would hide the knittedness...

but great work, i hope she loves it!

I'm just going to sew it onto felt backing, with a sleeve at the top and a sleeve at the bottom to slide a thin piece of wood or some other rigid material to give it some strength and structure... I'll string some rope on the back so it can be hung on a nail.

Not patience, but rather the memory span of a goldfish, so every other stitch feels like the first!

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Some of the best executed and most creative intarsia I've seen.

This makes me nostalgic for Nashville.
