I made these embroideries for a recent art show I was asked to participate in.  They're inside shadowboxes with little red velvet curtains.  Most of them are based on old sideshow photographs that I researched.  The finished pieces were between 10X10 and 12X12.

Dog girl:  She was double-jointed in her knees and could walk around on all fours

Lobster boy:  The real person was supposed to be quite controversial... he was even arrested for murder.

Parasitic twin:  This one doesn't show up too well because the thread is so light.  But it's based on a woman who had a tiny twin growing out of her abdomen.

And finally, conjoined twins.  This was the only one I did not base on an old photograph.  It also is the only one that sold.

Thanks for looking, everyone  Smiley

What an awesome idea!  I love the way you've displayed them with the curtains - very clever.

Human rights are for EVERYONE.  Did you know that Aung San Suu Kyi had been released from house arrest in Burma? Many other prisoners of conscience are still being detained.  Please research this topic... Amnesty International needs your help.

As soon as I saw this I started googling lobster boy and parasitic twins! Grin  It's pretty amazing stuff.  I also liked the way you used the curtains, good idea!

Thanks again everyone!

swtater123, yeah that stuff fascinates me.  Especially thinking about how there were actually touring freakshows when our parents were kids.  Soon due to modern science, there might not be any "abnormal" births anymore.
