Heyyyy.
I decided to branch out and try this mitten pattern.
http://www.cs.oswego.edu/~ebozak/knit/ck-patterns/mittens.html

I was able to figure everything out up until the point you pick up stitches for the thumb.

Pick up all sts on thumb holders...dig into the mitten fabric above thumb
opening and pick up 3 sts over where you cast on the one st before
starting the hand...Join...16 sts.

I know HOW to pick up stitches but where is the yarn coming from? All I have is the 13 stitches on the needles and a hole for the thumb. Does the yarn come straight from the ball? If so how do I join it?

I hope that made sense?

Take a new yarn end and just start making sts. Leave 2-3" to weave in later; the stitches will be a little loose, but they won't pull out.
