Ignore smittenheart, you will decrease too fast if you do that.  on your even rows, no decresing takes place.  Just knitting stitches that look like a lump (purls) and purling stitches that look like a v (knits)

I'm sure Theresia didn't mean to make you upset, sometimes things can sound harsh in writing just because you can't hear the tone of voice or see the body language of the person speaking.

I think the pattern is a bit confusingly written, and if you don't know that decreases are often done every other row it's not easy to get it right.
