My friend and I decided to do our own craft swap this xmas... I got a FABULOUS oversized, polar fleece robe (she is a seamstress extraordinaire).

For her item, I wanted to make something "witchy", after learning that she is into tarot, etc.  I made her a set of animal amulets based on the Major Arcana of Tarot cards.  I googled different animals, and matched their metaphysical "meanings" to corresponding cards, and then burnt their images into little wooden circles.  I also made a drawstring bag (http://happythings.typepad.com/happythings/2006/04/dsb_301_better_.html), and a book explaining the meaning of each amulet.  I forgot to take a picture of it all together.

The part that took the longest was cutting up the dowel and sanding each one... but the funnest part was the actual woodburning.  The images I took from photographs from google images, and simplified tracing with carbon paper.

It was my first time, and now I'm looking for more wooden things to BURN!

Cards with Animals go as follows:
0 The Fool = Badger
1 Magician = Swift Fox
2 High Priestess = Raven
3 Empress = Grizzly Bear
4 Emperor = Bighorn Sheep Ram
5 Heirophant = Great Horned Owl
6 The Lovers = Doe & Stag
7 Chariot = Ant
8 Strength = Cougar
9 Hermit = Whooping Crane
10 Wheel of Fortune = Monarch Butterfly
11 Justice = Red-tailed Hawk
12 Hanged Man = Bat
13 Death = Phoenix (not a real animal, but whatever, it's a scary card!)
14 Temperance = Coyote
15 Devil = Mountain Goat
16 Tower = Snake
17 Star = Orca
18 Moon = Wolf
19 Sun = Ladybug
20 Judgement = Frog
21 World = Dolphin

Thanks  Cheesy

Yes - it is addictive once you start.  We have a pine kitchen table that is looking WAY too boring...  ha ha!

These are awesome!  That looks like a lot of work.  I've always been chicken to try woodburning, maybe I should...

Are the circles as tiny as they look in this image--what is the diameter?

They are 1.5", the biggest dowel I could find at Home Depot.  Any smaller would have been too hard, I think.

It's really easy... you should try!

That's a really slick idea, I was thinking about making myself a set of runes from natural wood about my house but I was a tad intimidated by the thought of using a woodburner, perhaps I'll try it now.  Those look awesome.
