I eat your new nightstand. 
I used to have one very similar, but in black and white cow pile of flesh.  I ended up getting rid of it after a move, didn't have anywhere for it.  I used sticky shelf contact paper. 
I eat your idea with the fabric much better!

Yeah, using fabric didn't add any bulk to it. It's pretty clean cut.
