here's my version! this was a fun post-christmas just-for-me project! thanks for the inspiration!



hmm... it's kinda hard to see the color variation between his face and his beard/hair. maybe if i had some natural light for photos. oh well! i actually didn't have any appropriately colored yarn scraps, so (being the impatient person that i am!) i dyed my white yarn with tea. i think i may have to add an embroidered buckle for his belt too!

OR were you just a really smart crocheter and figured it out?

I'd still love to make one, but I'm just a newbie beginner and would need a pattern to even attempt this.

A belt! I needed a belt! He's cute.  And no, I didn't get a chance to post one.  I had to give it to my mom before I got time to actually write one out.  I'm sorry.

thanks! but i would hardly call myself a really smart crocheter. i'm mostly a knitter. but it was really easy to just make it up as i went along. i would try something, and if it didn't look right, rip back and try again. do you know how to crochet in the round? and change colors? he's really just a tube with no shaping until you get to the decreases for his pointy hat.

start like this:
chain 4, slip stitch to form a ring
round 1: 9 single crochets into the ring
round 2: 2 single crochets in each stitch (18 stitches)

once you have those 18 stitches, it's just a matter of changing colors for his clothes, beard, face, etc. and once you get to his hat, i did the decreases like this:

(starting with 18 stitches)
crochet 2 together, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat all the way around (12 stitches)
single crochet in each stitch (12 stitches)
crochet 2 together, single crochet in next stitch around (8 stitches)
single crochet in each stitch (8 stitches)
crochet 2 together all the way around (4 stitches)
cut your yarn and sew the remaining stitches closed in a point.

Ok.  Here's a kind of tutorial lol.  I made a chart for the gnomes face because that's easier to understand than me trying to type it all out.  I used grey for his beard because the background is white.

1. Start with a Magic Loop, sc 4.
2. 2sc in each around
3. Sc in each around
4. Repeat 2
5. Repeat 3 about 5 times (this should make it as wide around as it's going to get)
7. Start to work with the chart. (Keep in mind that the colors wrap all the way around).
8. After you get to the bottom of the beard, do a few rows of the blue.  When it's long enough for your liking, do a row of black.  Stuff it here.  Then, in work in the back of each stitch and decrease untill it closes.

I hope that helps.  The reason I start at the top is because, decreases leave little openings and you can see the stuffing.  It just looks better like that.

have I every had to follow a chart,  but there's always a first!
I'm having late Christmas celebrations at my house this weekend, but I'll certainly give it a try in the New Year.

Wow! This little guy is awesome! I have a gnome in my garden, but this guy is perfect for the inside! Everybody should have a gnome around the house.
