I made these roses for a recent swap.  They are the shattered remains of cedar cones.  I glued them from the bottom, so they won't come apart.  then I put three coats of paint on them, added silk leaves from recycled flowers, and wrapped them with floral tape.

Like 'em?

Those are so pretty! I feel dumb having to clarify, but I assume cedar cones are like pine cones but from cedar trees, right? What a clever idea! Did you paint them before or after you assembled to flowers? What did you glue them to? I like how the paint is varied, it makes them look more realistic.

Actually it's not a dumb question at all.  The cedar cones come from deodar cedar trees.  The cone itself is very much like a pine cone.  When it falls from the tree, it shatters and leaves the top part of it intact, which looks somewhat like a wooden rose.

What I do is to remove anything that is loose, pull the membrane from between the "petals", and add super glue into the bottom hole.  Then I can work with it without it falling apart.  I add the stem wire into the bottom hole, and then fill the hole with hot glue.  Then I can paint and assemble the flowers.  The darker ones are simply varnished.  The others are painted colors.  When I do white roses, I spray red paint over the top and let it fall into the rose, like spatter paint.

Glad you like them.

I don't mind at all!  Post 'em when you're done.

Just be aware that the cones only fall in the autumn, so you may not get any before then.  You can try to buy them online, but they may not be available yet.  The ones I have are left over from last fall.
