....yes, I said 'awesomeness', because I love these!

I took a jumbled mess of ribbons, and turned them into these lovelies.

Supplies:
-wooden plaque bases(these circular pieces were .50cents each at Hobby Lobby)
-wooden dowel rod (I'm pretty sure these are 1/4" ones).  One 4ft. length makes 4 12" ribbon holders.
-Glue (wood glue or something similar and sturdy
-Paint (optional)
-Sandpaper recommended

Tools:
-drill with a bit slightly smaller than your dowel rod (for a snug fit)
-ruler and pencil (if you like to measure to make sure they are centered)  A real Craftster just goes for it. Wink
-small saw to cut the dowels

1) Drill a hole in the center (NOT all the way through) and make sure you put a piece of junk wood underneath in case it DOES go through...

2) Cut your dowels to desired length (I went with 12", which is great!)

3) Test the fit
4) Sand the edges of the dowel and the base (you dont' want your pretty ribbons to catch on anything...

5) Paint them (if desired)

6) Glue together!  You can use a level to make sure they are straight...

Pimp out with ribbons, by taking THIS:

Tidy them all up by winding the spools and pinning them:

To THIS!

I heart these so much!  I think I need more, and more ribbon to make them pretty...

Those look and are wonderful.  I love my ribbons but they're all tossed into one big bucket upon which I can close off their unruliness from the rest of the world.  Think I'm going to have to whip up a few of those in the new year.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Yeah, I have a ton now!  I got these spools at all the craft stores:
Jo-Ann
Michaels
Hobby Lobby
Wal-Mart
BigLots

I usually wait until they are 50% off, cause otherwise they can cost TOO much.
Most of these were .50cents-$1 per spool, and that is for 3-15 yards!

This is such a neat (in more ways than one) idea! My ribbon is all tossed into a box, and I can never find it when I want it. I love how the ribbon is visible and accessible. Thanks so much for sharing!

Probably, but those would need to be REALLY skinny dowels... I haven't measured the center of the thread spools though.

I REALLY need more, especially in yellow and orange, so I can arrange EACH tier in Rainbow order!  I think I have  problem.  My name is Sarah, and I am addicted to craft supplies!

There was something similar in Family Fun Magazine for December, but it was for wrapping paper.  I'm sure this could be modified for spools of thread, they sell dowels down to itsy bitsy matchstick size.

I love the organization!  I never had my own "art room" until just this year, when I stole the "entertainment" room at our new home from my hub and claimed to be doing it in the name of saving him thousands by making him unable to buy a big screen tv LOL.  It does make life soooo much easier when you can actually see what you have...

the thread idea is a really good one too! you could actually probably do 4 dowels on one base since they're so small. i'm so going to try out this idea!

Thanks so much for this idea. I went to Hobby Lobby today and got all the materials and let my dh use his new drill to drill the holes. I have all my ribbon on them already, I haven't even painted them yet because I was so excited.

Hooray!  That's awesome.  It's a lovely feeling to help others around the world organize their pretty craft supplies.  I went back and got yellow and orange last weekend to round out my rainbow.  (obsessed much, me?)

I noticed at Hobby Lobby that they sell wooden wheels about this size that ALREADY have a hole drilled already; PLUS you can buy packs of 12" dowels!  Match up the right size and all you need is wood glue!  It will cost about $1.50 each to make them this way (instead of .65 cents) but it's a great way to cheat if you don't have a drill! Cheesy

I know! I bought the package of dowels, I have 10 left that I am either going to have to make more ribbon holders or figure out some other organizing use for them. I saw the wooden 'wheels' when I was looking for the plaque holders and thought about them but wasn't sure how sturdy they would be.

Argh!  I don't know how to post pictures, and it's so frustrating!  I made one of these yesterday but added my own little improvement.

I painted mine bright turquoise blue and put an antique cut glass drawer knob on the top.  My husband dubbed it a "deterrent against little grubby monkey fingered people" but I called it sparkly goodness.  Either way, they can't pull the spools off the dowels!

Good for you! I thought about doing that too, but mine sit HIGH on the shelf, so my kiddos can't get them.  Also, I like to be able to take one spool with me when I need to.

So glad it was helpful for you!
