I generally try to avoid doing a lot of Christmas knitting because it's way too stressful to get it all done in time.  Plus I am a selfish, selfish girl and I love to knit for myself.  But my little brother is always so appreciative of anything I make him that I thought he deserved a handknit gift.  So I made him these awesome gloves:

It's possible they aren't quite done yet because I'm not positive the fingers are long enough...he has REALLY long fingers.  So the finger ends are just pulled inside but not knit in, and I may have to undo the decreases and extend the fingers a tad on the 25th.

I am in love with these gloves!  I think they are pretty guy-friendly but the colorwork kept things from getting boring.  The yarn is Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift, which I loved working with--I think I am going to have to start doing more fine-gauge stranded work.  They were also a surprisingly quick knit.  Not counting the third of a glove I had to rip out because of an inexplicably tightening gauge, it took me about two and a half weeks to make them.

I also wrote up a pattern for them, if anyone else has a large-handed guy in need of some warm gloves. You can download it here.

Lovely!  They're definitely guy-friendly - the colorwork works because the colors aren't flashy.  Does the pattern continue on the palm?

Yes, the colorwork goes all the way around.  The gloves are knit in the round and there was no way I was just going to carry yarn along the back!

Seriously, he is the best...last year I made him a hat and he wore it around the house for several days straight afterwards.  I finally had to tell him he didn't have to do that and he was all "what?  It's a great hat!  Why shouldn't I wear it in the house?"

Those are beautiful gloves!  And props to you for taking a stand against the Christmas knit.  I also like to knit for myself more than anything, and I am glad to hear your conviction!  I have  fallen prey again this year to the endless scarves, hats, and mittens of gifts, and I am anxious to get back to the project for me!

Your brother will be honored to have those.
