I decided to make my mum some decent sized cushion covers for Christmas this year. A couple of years ago I made her a couple of cushion covers, but they were only 14" so a bit small.

This time I decided on 18". To start with I had planned a tree using my daughters handprints to make the canopy, but it didn't look right once it was all layed out. So hack to the drawing board. A couple of days later I received, in a sale bundle, a fat quarter of this fabric http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/under_the_australian_sun/ALOM-10359-200/
Definitely not something I would normally pick up, but the idea grew on me of using this Australian themed fabric to make something for my Mum. So I started again with the girls handprints appliqued and added a floral border and finished again with a plain.

And I was very happy with the out come, but I like to give cushion covers in pairs, there is something more balanced about it, so I decided to do one that matched but was a bit different. I've been embracing doilies recently so couldn't resist passing some on with this project:

Here they are as a pair:

And the backs. I was an inch or so short on the cream fabric for the back, so I added this decorative strip which also had the added bonus of adding a bit of extra length! I still have the buttons to sew on, that's tonight's job with a bit of TV!

C&C welcome.

Such an amazing idea, and both are beautiful! The fabric reminds me of vintage.  Smiley

And once you're onto a good idea, why not continue...off to replicate for inlaws.

What a sweet idea!  I love them both.  I like the doilies appliqued on to the one.
