I fell in love with this hat when I saw it on Keri Russell, as did most of the crafting world. I stumbled across a thread on craftster where everyone was trying to figure out this hat. I thought it would be the perfect thing to cover my always bad winter hair. I have had no success with knitting hats for myself and I had a ton of problems getting the fit of this right without ribbing. But it worked out in the end and I am happy with the results despite my frowny face =)

Lulu Clyde, thanks so much for the pattern. It is extremely well-written and it is also visually, the prettiest pattern that I have seen.  I also appreciate it that you put it in PDF form, as that made it really easy to download.

Lulu Clyde:  Is the hat knitted circularly?  Cuz i think it's implied from the directions that it's knit in the round, but since you didn't specifically say join in the round... I just wanted to make sure.

and my second question is, does "SS" mean stockinette stitch?

Thanks for the pattern... I've been looking for a hat to cast on for those lone skeins around the house.

Sorry guys. New to this pattern thing.

Yes you join in the round and that does mean stockinette stitch. I will add that and update the link.

Now that I have seen the original hat, I will also concur with others who have said that your hat is much nicer than hers. IMHO, hers is a bit sloppy, while yours looks elegantly casual. I think it might be due to the difference in color and also the different fabric. I like that yours is more feminine.

I'm on the second day of knitting this, and I am past the last increase, and is doing the 6 rows of even knitting... i know I should have asked this earlier, but what kind of M1 increase did you use?

for awhile I was using knit thru front & back, but i think that was throwing me off on my increases... so then I tried picking up an stitch in between the two, but then I don't really like the hole that it creates...  I guess I don't need anymore increases, but... i just thought I'd ask incase i'd want to make another one.

I finished Cheesy:D:D:D  I have quite the pumpkin head, but it's alright.  My girlfriend already laid claims on this. I'll make the next to be a bit roomier for my ample sized brain Smiley

Thank you again, LuLu Clyde.  I enjoyed knitting this hat Cheesy

I used Lion Brand Wool Ease.  The needles were 6's and 8's...only because I didn't have a 16' circular for the 7's.

Loved it!

Yay! People are actually making this hat. I really can't believe it. tinytallgirl yours looks great! I love it in grey.

I have a big head too! I scrunched it around the ears to give it the look in the pics. If I just stick it on I get this weird sort of sock head look, lol.

About the M1's. I used to get the weird hole too until I saw M1 directions saying to knit in the back of the stitch. I assumed that was the way everyone did and why I usually got holes and didn't this time. Try that and see if you like the look better. I usually use kfb but it gives you a little ridge that changes the look of the hat. I don't see why it should mess anything up though.

Here is a link to all any one ever wants to know and more about M1's.

http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases

Damn,  I had no idea that this many types existed.

If I look really closely at my increases there is a small hole. But the knit stitches when stretched on my head look the same so it's not noticeable to me.

Finished!!

CO: Dec 12 2007
Finished:  Dec 14 2007, 10:50am
Yarn:  Vanna's Choice (Olive 174) 100 % Acrylic, 100g/170yds
Needles:  US 5 & 7 knitpick circ

I broke my circ needle while working this... i think i was pulling the circ too hard... oh wells, i manage to push the circ part back into the needle and just make sure not to pull so hard.

I had a lot of questions with this pattern, due to just not understanding how normal patterns work.  with the M1s and the join in the rounds and such.  But in the end, I figure I'll just go with it, and see what happens.

I think with the M1 technique of making a new stitch in between the two stitches works for me.  I rather like the hole that it makes... if I should make it again, I shall do that.

the hat i thought would be a bit small for my head, but i think being able to squeeze the noggin into it will work, since yarn stretches.

all done!  thanks Lulu Clyde!!

Here's another felicity for ya!

I used Elsebeth Lavold Silky Flamm on 6's and 8's.  Unfortunately, this project had an owner before it was born.  I didn't want to give it up, I tell ya.

Picture it without the seaming needle

Blurry, but you get the point of how it fits...
