Ok, so my erector set one was just too heavy.  Although it did end up making a great drill winder for the time being until I can transfer all the stuff to legos.  Still working, still thinking this is the coolest, most fun project ever.  My 11 year old son is busy trying to help, it's awesome!

I was inspired by this post to attempt my own diy ball winder with K'NEX, but it just didn't work out as well as I'd hoped. Legos seem to be made much more for the purpose.
