My brother (now age 17) is obsessed with travelling the roads, he wants to wander, hitchhike, camp in the wilderness, etc. etc.  He doesn't have much of a realistic sense of how hard (and dangerous) this might be, but is pretty gung ho about it.

When my 2 year old son tore up (yet ANOTHER of) his books, I decided to use the cover to make a mini travel journal for my brother.  I thought the title was appropriate for the sentiment (don't take off and go crazy, WAIT and plan like the tortoise!).

I cut up pages from an old travel atlas, sewed them together with my sewing machine, and glued them in the book!  I used a few travel themed rubber stamps here and there, as an extra surprise in the book.  The title page has a recycled ATC envie, with a blank tag inside for him to write on.

It's just a little thing, but we are on a budget, so I'm happy to make a GREEN gift from what others would consider trash.

give HANDMADE this Christmas!

Hope he digs it!

Thanks so much!

There are a few pages with Alaska (which he is so enamored with).  My hubby asked why I didn't cover over the cover; I wanted it to look non-important (NOT like a journal) so he doesn't get teased or get it stolen.  Hopefully he likes it!

It's one of those things I thought "Am I a nerd for making this?Huh" but went ahead with it anyway.

When I backpacked europe I had my camera stolen, my replacement camera stolen, my credit card stolen, and my passport picked up and then left in another country (but I got it back) ...
But I'd NEVER heard of pickpocketers and theives attemting to steal journals, so I don't think the looks would matter much Tongue

I do love the journal though!
and trust me, my journal was my best friend!

The map paper idea was such a cute idea!

I rather dislike my sewing machine.

It isn't more the stealing (though he can hide money, ID, or reciepts in the pocket!) but about people reading his personal thoughts.  Smiley  Nothing like 'diary' on the front of a book to make a teenage boy NOT want to write in it!

Sorry 'bout your bad travel luck!

If he doesn't adequately appreciate the book now, he most certainly will after he travels a little. How fun to have a little brother who's a classic travel-romantic; such a great inspiration for crafting/creating a travel journal!

He could always cover the book with stickers from the places he travels, too, and that would make it all the more "him"...I'd love to see another one made from the covers of Dr. Seuss's "Oh The Places You'll Go!"

This crafter is out of service most of the rest of 2015 due to a wild schedule, swapping once in a while when I can't fight the feeling anymore ("I've forgotten what I started fighting fooooor...").
Personal swaps: I have lots of home-grown rosemary and white sage available, plus altered journals.

Good idea!  I should give him a gluestick with it and tell him to add snippets from wherever he goes, like a passport. Cheesy

Here he is, BTW, for all of you younguns... Wink http://www.flickr.com/photos/originalyouth/2106122990/

That is so beautiful and touching. As a hippy/traveler/hitchhiker/backpacker, I think you totally hit the nail on the head with this journal! I'm sure your brother is going to love it and the thought that went into this gift.
