I like to let at least 2/3 of the lights in my house burn out before I replace them, and then I usually throw them all away. This time I decided to fool around with them, and I'm glad I did.

Kind of cheesy, maybe, but it makes me happy. And yes, that is a sprig of parsley. Don't laugh.

First, pry off the little copper disc on the bottom with a knife.

I use a fork tine or a wire hanger to break that little round of purple glass, and dump that in the trash.
Holding the bulb by the metal part,

hit the screwdriver gently with a hammer to break the glass inside.

Use some needle nosed pliers to remove the wires & glass tube inside.

Rinse out the white powder. If there's any black stuff on the glass, use a q-tip to clean it off.

I think this would be beautiful as a part of a set. Just a bunch hanging on the wall or from the ceiling in a cluster.

Just ten minutes ago I threw out one of my last incandescent bulbs! (I'm switching to compact flourescents...) But it's still in the wastebasket, and I'm going to go dig it out right now. What an awesome idea! And thanks for the info on gutting it - I have an irrational fear about sticking metal in anything that's had such a close relationship with electricity, even though I know it doesn't really work that way... Roll Eyes
Your wire...setting/hanger/whatever you call it, is really beautiful, too.

Supercool! I'd wanted to make these after seeing someone's photos of one she spotted in Mexico, which you can see here.

Sorry to double post; I ran out and made one right away.

I made mine (temporarily) a lightbulb standing vase by setting it in a bottle cap. This one has the odd effect that it looks like it has two screw ends.

Another cap I tried had writing in it, which was refracted through the bulb. You could probably use this to advantage - write a secret message, glue it on the bottom, and give it as a gift. Or epoxy a florist's marble inside the cap to give it some color. Maybe a big wad of artificially colored bubble gum would add color *and* be adhesive *and* be recycled.

Brillant! I'm switching over to CFL's and have a bunch of left over incandescent light bulbs. I'm going to make me some vases!
