This week I've been working on making incontinence pads that will also work after baby arrives as menstrual pads.  (Environmentally friendly ideas here.)  Smiley

Anyways, here's my first attempt:

the above worked well, but the wings were too narrow I thought.

So I tried again:

a more rectangular approach seems to work better:

I think I like the rectangle pattern approach better with fit.  So I will make up more of those.

For the details (for those so intrigued):

I simply traced a disposable pad and started there and modified as I saw fit to do.

Then after I figured out my own patterns, I then went ahead and made a soaker pattern, too off the larger pattern.

For the actual product,

1 full body of pul
2 full body layers of flannel
6 soaker layers of flannel.
polyacetal snaps
100% polyester thread
ball point needle

I once made feminine products out of washcloths and snaps. No cutting, no sewing ... you just fold one washcloth in thirds, install three snaps so that you can snap the loose edge of the bottom layer to the folded edge of the second layer (not right on the edge, but close, if that makes any sense), and then if you need a little more absorbency, you can fold a second washcloth in thirds to use as kind of an absorbent "filling." Not sure if the way I'm explaining it makes sense, but the layers go like this: Panties on bottom, then lay washcloth without snaps, folded in thirds, over that, then lay second washcloth (the one with snaps) on top, centered, and then wrap it around and snap it at the bottom. Kind of bulky but very absorbent, and since the "wings" go the whole length of the pad, they're less likely to leak.

You could probably riff on that design and come up with something much better, but I thought they worked pretty well for something that didn't require any sewing or much actual work.  Cheesy

thats a great idea but won't the blood stain the fabric?  i guess it doesnt really matter as no one will see it anyway, but that fabric is too cute to stain!

i chose a print for that reason.  if it does stain it won't be real obvious.  'sides, i do diaper laundry daily so staining will be at a minimum - those pads are giong to be tossed in with the diapers.  Smiley

redfork hippie - what you describe is kind of what i've been doing - only using soakers (which are extra layers used in diapers).  no snaps, though.  i decided i deserved something pretty for me.  Smiley
