(This is my very first post and my first project of this kind.)
So after searching all day, I found this ugly thing at the Salvation Army priced at $9.99. I asked for a better price and got it for $6.99.

It appeared to have been homemade and using some upholstery fabric-you know, the kind that your grandma has on her couch that no one will sit on.... yuck!

After pulling out about a million staples and prying out a lot of nails, removing the gross stuffing stuff i ended up with a box basically. a STINKY box. (after an entire day of spraying with lysol, febreeze and body spray it finally smelled better)   Smiley

So i went to the store and bought a 2x4, foam, black lining fabric, microsuede upholstery fabric, a staple gun and staples, hinges, thick batting, fence post toppers for the feet and a hacksaw. BTW- i started this project on Dec 1st and got it done just in time! I told you i was a procrastinator!
These are the during shots...

This is where the hacksaw came in, the screws are permanently attached to these and they were too long so i had to saw a little bit off.  I painted these with some paint i already had.

And the completed project!

I am going to put the hinges on later so i can just flip it open. I plan on putting magazines or the remotes or maybe a blanket in there. I love it, let me know what you think!

That is a great transformation!  It was so fun to look through all of the pictures and seeing it come along.

Wow, the first piece was nasty. Cheesy

This is so amazing and a very creative way to dress up a "stinky box."  Great Find!

Wow! You really re-hauled that thing. Seeing it all taken apart makes me think you could have made that all from scratch. You are really great at reupolstering furniture.

My grandparents-in-law made some of these for the kids and grandkids for Christmas in 2000. They're wonderful. My kids love to hide toys in them Cheesy

Amazing transformation!  A hint for next time you have stinky wood to deal with is alcohol-based primer which is available at "real" paint stores (not sure about home centers and hardware stores).  It STINKS itself and definitely should be applied in a WELL ventilated area.  However, the strong smell only lasts until the primer is dry (and hour or two) AND that stuff blocks the smell (and stains) of 50 years of cigarette smoke, house-fire smoke, mildew, etc. so it can block stinky-old-furniture smell.

Wow - those storage ottomans are quite pricey for the large ones, so you did great!
I'll have to keep my eyes open for one to transform, myself.

Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone.  i am going to tackle my older couch and loveseat someday when i figure out how! it has this curvy wood trim that goes around the top and arms.  but i LOVE my ottoman, i sit on it and have magazines in it right now. it looks so cute in my living room. i suggest everyone make one!
