Poseidon's Pet
«
on:
December 04, 2007 09:39:10 PM »
I found this at the Rescue Mission for $6.99. I know, too much. It screamed 80's so badly that believe it or not, at the register "Love is a Battlefield" was playing by Pat Benatar. I remember the video, I'm sure someone was wearing this. It is a study in excess, Ruffles, sequins, lace, bow, rhinestones and shoulder pads.
It took a bit of time taking it apart. I started out with Simplicity's pattern 4063 -- a dragon pattern.
The fabric was very difficult to work with. If you are ever tempted to buy polyester satin, run away from the bolt. So long as you don't have to put ANY stress on the seam, perhaps it will be okay. It also does not take an iron well, so be careful if you have to use any fusible interfacing with it. That said, the directions don't want hardly any seam allowances, they are 1/4 inch and it has you clipping to thread all over the place. I sewed the strips of the ruffles together after removing and pressing. If I had to do it again, I would have fused the fabric "sheets" I made to the interfacing at that time-- Not after I cut the pattern pieces.
I gave up on the legs and feet, really who can do this without the f-bomb? So I adapted it to sea-monster, it really wanted to be a sea creature.
Here's Poseidon's Pet:
The dress was a thrift store find and not in my size. The pattern can be used again. I might play with it after the holidays with different fabric to see if it works any better. The directions are not that great. It uses a lot of wire, I don't care for the way the dragon's wings are done. This is why I did a sea monster. I'd like to imagine him pulling a sea chariot for Poseidon.

Simplicity 4063 is still giving me nightmares 4 months later. You are a BRAVE BRAVE woman. Even more so for using poly-satin. EEK!
Props for the wicked cool sea monster.

Here's a helpful hint: Someone once told me she never cuts patterns out. She uses shoe paper (I'm not sure if that's different from regular tissue paper, which you can get huge squares of in the gift-wrapping section of the store) and traces the pattern and uses that instead. That way she can use the pattern an infinite number of times, and either give it to someone else or sell it at a garage sale.
Although I get the impression this isn't something you're going to be trying again soon, anyway.
Great job! My first thought on seeing the dress was what a beautiful color it was, and then I saw the bigger picture and thought YUCK! You did a great job in turning something awful into something awesome (and cute!).

shame on me for my adoration of the original dress!!
but poseidon's pet is a damn fine re-incarnation. don't think I could touch my collection of eighties relics though... might just have to keep them festering in the wardrobe a bit longer, until arm-swallowing puff sleeves come back into fashion. although you never know...
well done
