I saw "The Life Aquatic" on Tuesday night. There's a lot of great knitted stuff in there, but I became obsessed with the little red beanies all the team Zissou members wore... so I made my own!!!!! yay! mine is like the one Klaus wears because it has a pom pom on top- i didnt know how to make that extra little bunch of fabric like other guys have (i've decided to call that a 'hair reservoir').

alright, this is my first ever tutorial! if anyone has a correction (terminology, etc) just say so and i'll fix it. Smiley

TEAM ZISSOU HAT

Materials:
•   Four US size 8 dpns (or a size 8 circular needle - a 16” would be good. The only reason I didn’t use that is cause I don’t have one).
•   US size 8 straight needles
•   Bright red worsted weight yarn (I used this acrylic stuff called “fashion knit” in the color Flame Red from hobby lobby. It’s got aloe vera in it—the yarn is SO SOFT! I usually don’t like acrylic but I actually love this yarn. It feels good to work with. If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby I recommend it.)
•   Yarn needle

As for the size of the hat, I’d say this one fits any adult head. It’s snug on me but it stretches quite a bit because of the ribbed cuff.

With the straight needles, CO 66 sts.

Transfer the sts onto the dpns, with 22 sts on each needle.

Rounds 1-10: work in K2 P2 rib.

Rounds 11-29: K.

Rounds 30-41: K like before, except when you get to the last 2 sts of each needle, K2tog.
NOTE: on the last 3 rounds I decided to K2tog two times (when I got to the last 4 sts per needle). You can do it that way if you want.

Cut off the yarn, leaving a long tail. With the yarn needle, thread the yarn through the sts and pull tight to cinch the top. Secure yarn and weave in ends.

POM POM (only if you want it, of course!)
Wind yarn around your pompom maker and finish off. Secure to top of hat & weave in ends.
I braided a little length of yarn to secure it with and left the pom pom some room so it can dangle around the top.

IF YOU WISH TO, make a team Zissou patch!!! I just took a piece of sky blue felt and embroidered the little 3 Zs logo onto it. Like this:

Then sew your patch onto the top right of your hat’s cuff. DONE!!! :-D

my favorite part is the little Team Zissou logo patch!!! Smiley

Oh that's so funny!!!!  I just saw it on Tuesday as well.  My boyfriend already wants a team Zissou shirt.  I love the little patch that you made.

Haven't seen the movie yet, (I might tonight, either that or A Very Long Engagement ) but the hat looks really cute, even without the movie reference!  In the first picture I thought it was diagonally striped, then realized it was the sunlight.  Nice job!

hehe i went to the website because i wanted to see the hats! the little hat reservoir looks to me like just the upper part of a really tight hat. maybe if they wear the hats pretty high up on the head and don't fold over the cuff too much, you'll get a hat reservoir? who knows! i've made plans to see the movie tomorrow so maybe i'll find out then....  Grin
