I also started making hand-dyed dolls to represent different ethnicities and tried selling them on etsy to no avail.  What's the word?--and how do you think that I can improve them?

Okay, so their heads are crooked, but beyond that...what more can I do without spending a lifetime on each one?

I don't think they're ugly. Sometimes you just have to have a gimmick. I'm surprised what people go crazy over. I guess i just don't have that vision of what would be popular. However, malibukasey does. Everything she does seems to have magic in it.

They aren't ugly, but they are missing an important feature.  Try adding noses.  They just don't look quite right without them.

I think they are cute.. but a little out of my price range for a doll that size.  I am not in any way knocking them.  I know they take time, and they are worth it, but it is hard finding people to spend the money! They would rather go to Wal-mart and buy some unloved, plastic doll.
Good luck.. they are so cute!

ok, i think they are ugly.....which i hate saying, because i KNOW you work hard on them...

they look simple, and the lack of noses really does hurt....

if they were mass marketed, i wouldnt snub them as much, but they dont have enough personality for a handmade product IMHO

each doll should be special if you make it by hand...not look like you assembly line made it, that would sell it to me, and i bet alot of other people

like Bella, i love her dress, and i was drawn to her name...but she just...she doesnt *say* anything...

i hope my opinion helps, cos i normally wouldnt share it (better say nothing at all, if you have nothing nice to say)

wait...i have something nice to say!! i love the size!! they are perfect for snuggling

This is a good start to a good idea!

A few of my first impressions-

They're not promoted as ethnic dolls in your description very much and that could be an attention grabber but I don't know how you could do that in a "PC" way but there probably is - maybe mention something about diversity??  not sure.

When I saw your pics here, I thought the eyes could be improved alot - especially if you want to show the whole ethnicity thing.  Then, when I looked at the small pictures on your etsy site, the eyes don't really even show up.  So, eyes that 'pop' could get you more views.

I hope this helps

I think they are adorable! And it's a great idea. Maybe you could amp up your sale a bit, tell a little story about each  doll to personalize them. They remind me of my nephew's doll, Goodwin. Goodwin is awesome, and your dolls are too.  (http://www.molloytoy.com/ is where Goodwin came from, it might give you some additional inspiration) Good luck!

I like their hair, but they don't say "cute" to me... which sells.

There are a couple of reasons:
- no chin
- neck too long/ proportions off
- position of the arms
- no nose
- weird smile

I think a good starting point would be drawing similar dolls, to see what makes them cute, and look at Waldorf-style dolls.
