5 Pound Candy Wreaths
«
on:
November 25, 2007 10:44:21 AM »
When I was in high school some friend of my mom's taught me to make these. The 8 inch rings are the easiest and quickest to make. They take me about 1 hour to do (depending on the type of candies used). These are gifts for my boyfriends g-parents and parents. The 10 inch one will go to my mom's work.
This is a 6 inch ring.
This is a 8 inch ring. (this takes about an hour).
and this is a 10 inch ring. (It took about 2 hours partially because I was doing it at work)
I'll be making more this week and will take pics as I make one, in case any one is interested.
(sorry if the pics are really big)

We used to do this when I was a kid, the way we did it is you just make a circle out of a wire hanger, leaving the bendy part for a hook. Then you take several pieces of curling ribbon (the kind you can curl with scissors) You literally just tie knots around the wire, and slip in the candy by one of the wrapper ends, and tighten. after you fill it up you curl up the ribbons! I don't see any curly ribbons on this one though, so maybe she has a different way. I'd love to hear how.

not sure how this one was made, but when we used to make them we used either curling ribbon, pipe cleaners or spools of floral wire for the candy and the wreath shape was made of hangers or really thick wire from the hardware store... if you can find candy in colorful wrappers it works better, the whole idea is after the candy is gone the wrappers still look pretty since you just untwist one side and leave the wrapper behind when you take the candy... i'm diabetic too... my fav candies are the sugar free jolly ranchers, they are awesome, i actually prefer them to real jolly ranchers lol, and they are in printed wrappers so you could include them... also, don't be afraid to include some clear wrappers as well... and every so often if you want a little change you can wire or tie some cellophane squares, ribbons, flowers, novelty plastic things (like the stuff they sell at party city 897 for a dollar lol), tissue, beads, etc etc

I am definitely interested? how did you get all the groovy little candies attached to the wreath, and what is the base of the wreath? Looks like fun and a fabulous thing to have around!

I'll be making another one probably tonight when I get home or tomorrow, and will take pictures of the process.
Basically, I use a pre-formed metal circle as the base. I loop ribbon around it to make the hanging tie and then leave the ends to tie a bow. Then I use wire/monofilament/curling ribbon to wrap several times around the ribbon loop and ring. I make sure that is tied well. Then as I wrap the fishing line around the ring, I take a piece of candy and slide it between the ring and fishing line. As you wrap they secure themselves on (because you keep wrapping the fishing line around) and the more candies being added. I go all the way around the ring and then once I get to the ribbon hang, I make sure there is candy all the way to it and past if needed. I then work the fishing line around the candies (I try to get it as close to the ring as possible) and tie it several times.
I'll try to put up pics of the process tonight.

I'm doing these also! I use a coat hanger, bend it in to a circle and then use curling ribbon to attach the candies. Cut them in like 1 foot lengths. Tie the first candy on with a knot and then slip knot the candies until you've got about 4 inches of ribbon left and knot the last candy, then start again.
I'm going to try and show photos again but I'm not having much luck, if anyone can help with this I'll love you forever!!! If if works, you might even get a wreath
I can be bought!!

Oldprin, I ALWAYS forget how to post pictures, lol. Just upload them to someplace like Image Shack, then you post where the image is between these two lines:
img /img
in between you'd put the page address of where your pic is. You must put those words in brackets [] or it won't work. If this is unclear (the page won't let me type it out, because if I do it thinks I'm trying to post an image! hahaha) check out this faq:
