I recently (this past weekend) was taught a form of Japanese embroidery by someone who had taken the class in hachinohe. I plan on going to the craft consignment shop to get all the patterns from her (or whoever is there) but I am currently trying to discover what type it is (since I have learned that there is way more than one) so that I can learn a little more history behind it and also so I can continue years from now when I am no longer in Japan. Photo of the pattern I completed below.

Hi !
The embroidery technique is called Sashiko (刺し子)

The following sites may shed some light on the background & history:

As for the patterns - there are a lot of books on it (Japanese & English) - you can ask the local bookstore salesperson (or the lady at the craft shop) to help you find them in the shelves.
There also also kits available from craft shops (in stock all season or you can also order) - including the pattern, thread & cloth. Most kits are of tea towels though...

Hope that helps. Smiley

THANK YOU!!!!! I had been knocking my brain out trying to figure it out! I will go look at some craft stores, I don't mind doing tea towels.
