Hi There,
I'm currently a fashion major at Marymount University. I'm looking for a fashion internship so that I can gain more experience with a fashion company.
Please let me know. I am also willing to work with independent designers.

Thanks,
Kelly

I don't have any connections to the fashion industry or know how far you are in your search, but have some questions which may help steer your search.

1) Can you ask one of your professors for contacts?

2) What part of fashion are you targeting?  You said you were willing to work with independent designers--are you in design?  Merchandising?  Manufacturing?  Retailing?  Another area?

3) Do you want to stay in DC?

4) Does Marymount have a career center that can provide you leads?

5) Sometimes I see in the "Washington Post," "Washington Life," and similar magazines mentions of DC-based designers and independent boutiques.  Perhaps those could be good leads for cold calls.

6) Do the larger department stores have corporate offices based in the area?  I know Hecht's used to near Marymount, but since the May Co. was bought out by Federated, I'm not sure that's the case anymore.

7) Do you have a portfolio, resume, cover letter, or whatever other materials are needed prepared?

Good luck.

Thanks. Those are really good questions.
1. Not really .. but I could ask my advisor.
2. IM planning on working in fashion design. But if necessary I would be willing to do retail or marketing.
3. It would be the most convenient to work in dc.
4. Marymount does.. but the ones that they have aren't for freshman, and they aren't anything I'm interested in. I've also done alot of research on my own, and that's gone no where.
5. yeah i've done that already.. but i think i should do it more.
6. I dont know.. i'll look that up.
7. I have a portfolio, and my resume. And I'm going to write the cover letter to suit each internship.

Work those connections!  They'll have more information on jobs or good ways to get one than the classifieds ever will.  Working for free could also be an incentive.  I don't know if there are any trade groups around focusing specifically on fashion, but try checking out the memberships of various chambers of commerce, too.  Good luck.
