Lucky Stars Quilt

This quilt is for my mom's birthday.  It's called "Lucky Stars" and is an Atikinson Designs pattern.  It's a queen size with extra room to tuck over the pillows (90 x 105).  I just started laughing when I found out how BIG that is!

I have a laser machine, and all of the pieces for this quilt were laser cut.  I LOVED having exactly perfect pieces to work with.  The problem is that I discovered my sewing techniques sometimes aren't that great!

There are over 30 different fabrics in this quilt--a mix of quilt store stuff and Tracy Porter stuff from Joann's.  It took me a little over 3 months to make and I sent it out to be quilted.  Yesterday, I sat through "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Ocean's 13" while I finished hand sewing the binding on.  I got the label sewn on this morning, and it's DONE!

How did you get the pieces laser cut?!

My husband and I bought a laser several years ago to cut a part we were fabricating for our business.  We no longer make that part so the laser was just gathering dust.  Rather than sell it, though, I've been using it for all my crafty stuff instead!  For quilting, I have to draw the pieces in Corel Draw.  Next, I  print the file to the laser just like sending it to a printer.   And, zip zip zip!  I have perfectly-cut quilt pieces in just a few minutes.

I absolutely love this quilt!  A little jealous with the perfect cut pieces...but hey...let me go find my scissors (I'm not even up to rotary cutting!)...

I'm not sure I understand how this laser cutter works. Doesn't it just burn the fabric?
