I tried to look and see if anyone else had done this, but to my surprise, the search came up negative. I was shocked!!

My grandmother was OBSESSED with owls. She was also a very crafty lady! I remember that she used to make pine cone owls and glue them onto logs and such to display around the house (along with other owl craftyness she deemed fit). This is my version of a pine cone owl, as her obsession has spread to me... minus the glitter and pastel colors.

Wanna make one yourself? It's really easy! You need two pine cones, some felt, feathers, googly-eyes, etc and imagination!

For the base, take one pine cone and have the pointy side of the pine cone facing downwards, so the base is at the top. Then you take your second pine cone and glue it to the first, laying on it's side, so the base becomes the face. To make the pine cone stand on it's own, you need to make sure the bottom pine cone isn't crooked, then break off a few of the bottom pieces. You can save two of them to make the ears for the owl, or you can use feathers, etc.

My grandmother made her face using feathers and googly eyes. And some people use nuts (like a sunflower seed) as the nose. I just used felt as that was what I had handy. Cheesy  ALSO- I remember her using baby pinecones for the ears as well. Cheesy

Thanks for looking, and if you make one I'd love to see it! XD

It's very fun! I wish I had better pine cones to work with. I had collected these several months ago and they aren't the best for this project. I live near palm trees, not pine tress, so I have to make a trip to the mountains if I want more. Sad

These are darling - and I've never seen pine cone owls before!

And now that I live in pine cone country, I have unlimited resources - I need to go out and collect some next week.

Daiconharuko - if you'd like to trade something for pinecones, let me know!

Awesome! My sister once made pine cone dwarf, but this is better! Because the pine cone stands nicely for the owl's feathers...
