I cannot believe no one has an answer. I have a an old cook book from my mother's home town, one of those fund raisers. My cousin put in Grandma's SPP rec. I have never tried it. /When my husband gets up I will go searching for book.
In the mean time, try a basic pumpkin rec. be sure you are using one for home cooked p as canned is wetter, I think, possibly have to add tad more milk if sp come out dry. Also from when I worked in a bakery, the sp pie had more spice than pumpkin. Best to use individual little cans of spice, rather than the pre mixed
Hope that helped rather than confused.

I can take the credit for this recipe, but I also can't remember where I found it...

Crust
Mix and press into a 9in pie pan
 1 1/2 C ginger snap crumbs
 2 Tbs sugar
 1/4 C melted butter

Bake crust for ten minutes at 350
after pulling out the crust, bump heat up to 375

Mix together
 1 1/2 C mashed sweet potato
 1/4 C butter, melted
 1/2 C brown sugar
 1 tsp cinnamon
 1/2 tsp nutmeg
 1/2 tsp ground ginger
mix then add to potatoes
 2 eggs
 1 C Half and half
Stir everything well, pour into crust and bake at 375 for 30 minutes then sprinkle topping over and bake for another 20 minutes

Topping
Mix together
 1/4 C flour
 1/4 C brown sugar
 1/4 C toasted pecan, chopped
 1/8 tsp cinnamon
 1/8 tsp nutmeg
 2 Tbs butter, melted

Enjoy. This one goes really fast at our house.
