What do a cupcake paper holder, a bunch of scrap thread, and a play crane all have in common? In the hands of an imaginative three year old, they can all come together and become a special home for a bird!

My son rounded up my scrap thread from recent sewing projects and was using his construction crane to hook and lift it in the air when he decided that the thread would make a good bird nest. I suggested that he use the empty cupcake paper holder that he told me he wanted me to save for him, and he went to work making his project.

When he was finished, I admired the fine nest he made, but we realized that we had no bird to use it. In remedy to that problem, we went downstairs for some pink felt and brown thread. I cut out a bird shape, and he helped me add the decorative stitches. He was very excited to be using the needle and thread. So excited, in fact, that I had to keep reminding him how sharp the needle was and that he needed to be very careful and let me help him.

Little pink bird is very happy about her new nest. She is spending the night on my kitchen windowsill. She needs to get her rest, as she is sure to be in for some fun adventures with her new 3 year old buddy!

I'm thinking this bird and nest idea might be something we can work on a bit and turn into Christmas gifts for the grandparents from my son. It is something my he is excited about and can help make for them. I will have give that idea some more thought and see where it leads...

Ya know if you put it in one of those mini flower pots and maybe used yarn or something else instead of string, it could very easily become a really adorable gift from you little boy.

Great!!! I am sure he could do other shaapes too. He could maybe do some trees?? If he did more birds, you could glue some to clothes pins, and they could hook to Christmas trees as ornaments.
I just love that he is doing them. I am a gm, and would treasure one. Oh, do include a picture with the gift!!!

Adorable!  I love that you helped him with the needle and that he is a calm enough 3 not to have a hissy fit because he wants it!   My son would have melted down at that age.  Now he's 15.... it goes so fast!

At 3 he might want to move on from the bird and try different animals--unless he is bird-obsessed.  My boy was train-obsessed.

What a cutie!  Definitely, send pictures to the grandparents.
