how do you make scented clay charms?
«
on:
November 09, 2007 02:54:46 PM »
i've seen some awesome charms that people have made,
and i want to learn how to make them scented!
any help will be appreciated.
here are a few of my questions:
what kind of scents do you use? (candle scent? soap scent? i don't know)
do you add the scent after its baked, or before?
where can you buy scents?
what method would you use to make it scented?
thanks!

No time to answer much now, but check out this page of my website for a lot of info to get you started:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/inclusions.htm
.... then click on the category called

depending on what your making it depends
you can buy scents like lemon and vanilla oil at stores like hobby lobby or Micheal's for me i like to mix in the oil or scent in the icing or top layer if miniatures
i did try soap scents and those turn sour or rancid in the oven (for me at least)
Hope this helps

There is a fantastic seller on eBay who sells scents you can use for polymer clay. Her user name on eBay is ourheavenscents. You can buy 1/2 ounce portions on ALL SORTS of scents for super cheap.
They are oil scents - stuff you use for soaps, candles, etc. But she has exotic sounding scents like fudge brownies and apple pie and fresh cotton.

I just started playing with polymer clay but I have ventured into the scent world.
I have used oils for burnging, soaps, and candles and so far they have all been successful. When Im kneeding the clay, I kindof poke a hole in the center and put a few drops into it. Then I close up the hole and slowly begin to kneed. It'll get a little wet, but it'll eventually all kneed in. After Im done making it into whatever shape, I bake it.
The scent is still there after I bake (not AS strong, though). After that, I glaze it. Ive done strawberry frosting and a cinnamon bun and you can still smell both of them after I've glazed.
You can buy your oils at Hobby Lobby or Michael's which are 2.99+ for a tiny bottle. OR you can go to walmart and by about 3x the amount for 1.99. If youre experimenting at first, I would try Walmart (unless you're unlike me who has to drive over an hour to get to a craft store and you want to try theirs).

Thank you for sharing this! Could you please elaberate on the scents that you purchase at Walmart? Are they the ones sold in the insence department? I think that they are sold for the little heated aroma therapy burners? Thank you very much! Your explanation and information is very helpful!

I only use a drop of oil in pieces of clay that are as big as a... well, comparable to the size of a half a golfball or something. Otherwise it makes the clay unstable and it just crumples after you bake it.

You and me both!!
Especially since I just started a new thread asking this same quesiton. Duh. I should look first.
Anyway......
Can a drop of the oil be mixed with liquid sculpey and brushed on? Will that maintain the scent without ruining or mushin' up the original piece?
