Help with a walking foot?

What exactly is a walking foot? What does it do? And does anyone have a picture of one? Thanks! Id like to *try* to make a quilt, and this contraption is supposed to help, right?

A walking foot has feed dogs on the top that work with the existing feed dogs on your machine to feed the layers through the machine at the same rate.  It definitely helps. Here is a picture http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Walking-Foot-for-Sewing-Machines/2022843/product.html
