What are your favorite bricks & mortar stores for handmade goods in Indiana, especially around Indianapolis? I want to buy handmade but not sure where to look, and the internet hasn't been helpful.

Global Gifts on Mass Ave and the Art Center in Broad Ripple are both nice, although not necessarily what you are after. There's always online shopping, like etsy, as well.

The Sleepy Hollow, in Irvington (eastside Indy) has some nice handmade gifts, best are the Zap Babies!

Unfortunately in Indianapolis "handmade" usually means sweatshop labor. Someone mentioned Global Gifts but I'm pretty sure they mostly sell sweatshop-made goods. The Indieana Handicraft Exchange occured in October but Indianapolis must have been sleeping. That would have been your best bet... otherwise Sleepy Hollow in Irvington, as someone mentioned. I wonder if Indianapolis is ready for the handmade revolution or if we're too addicted to cheap goods from Walmart? Please excuse my pessimism.

When I am intown, my mom lives there, I can find some cute enough toys at Creations for my daughter.

I found her a crazy Easter bunny there that was completely recycled.

I was really suprised.

I thought that was an old lady store.

Nope, Global Gifts is a Mennonite-run fair trade shop. You can feel good about shopping there. It's fair trade and all the workers except the manager are volunteers (many but not all Mennonites). They are also really nice. Their goods are from overseas but are not from sweatshops, mainly small co-ops and such. Their prices are good too.

Do they still have the "Art Vending Machine" in the Arts Garden? I haven't lived in Indy in a while but I loved the vending machine!

There are some good links here for buying art in Indy: http://www.indyarts.org/
Don't forget local galleries, the Harrison Center, and the Art Center in Broad Ripple.

*looking forward to coming home at Christmas*
