i hated every cake topper i saw and it wasn't worth it for me to try to find someone to design and make one because it would be too expensive and to me, it was one of those details that wouldn't really be noticed. so, i had the florist order extra flowers and we covered the cake with them.

We did flowers, too. I picked up some roses at Kroger on the way home from getting my hair done that morning (yes, I am a procrastinator!).
Originally I wanted birdies like these from an artist on Etsy, but I cheaped out & veto'd them due to cost.

Put yourself on top of the Cake!

I found a seller on Ebay that did these! I thought my hubby would get a kick out of them, and it would look great on our cake.
We now have them in a display cabinet with the sand from our wedding.
it is not cheap, $50-$75, but totally worth it.
What our total cake look liked!
I made most everything for my wedding - Invitations included (Over 250 guest) and felt that I could splurge on the things that I really wanted!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/annemarlow/sets/72157600095721633/
This is the link to my Photographers flicker page that has a bunch of other photos of my neato items.
If you need any help thinking up something - convo me! FYI - I did not spend a lot of money on this wedding. Money was spent where it was needed that left room for the things that I really wanted!

Anne was a great photographer. I found her totally randomly too. I was searching the net for invitation ideas and found her page on a wedding site. That then linked to her Blog and then I found her website. I emailed her that night at like 1am and booked her. I had never met her till the day before my wedding.
Everyone there loved her - no bright flashes that blinded you, and she shot the photos that you would of forgotten to take.
Here is the post on her blog that was for my wedding.
http://anneruthmann.blogspot.com/2007/04/wedding-dena-jeff.html
If you click on any of the photos there is a picture movie with sound.
She is really busy now because her shooting style is HOT. I had two friends getting married and they tried to book her at my wedding and she was full a year in advance.
One thing that I did with my wedding is: If you choose good vendors then let them do what they do. They do this for a living! Our band at our wedding wanted to do a blues brothers set - and my hubby and I thought it would be cheesy and they said that all other wedding loved it. We said OK, you do wedding more that we do. Our guest LOVED IT!
Off my wedding soap box!

We couldn't find anything we liked either, so I had a fondant bow made that flowed over the sides from the top.

I had cake topper woes as well. I made some out of polymer clay but I ended up burning them and painting over the clay but I didn't get that done in time to give to the cake decorator so we ended up with a fondant bow as well and I put the clay dudes off to the side. Here's a picture:
I can't find my close up picture of my guys though. We had the reception at a winery so those boxes in the background are inventory
Looks kind of strange in the picture but didn't look bad in person.
Have you picked a baker for your cake yet? Definitely talk to them, they might have some ideas for fun toppers involving fondant or something else.

Ours is simple and can be adjusted to suit your taste. With Christmas coming up it's a great time to start looking for letters too. For the stand part we used a jewelry hanger for little girls from a store like Claire's and just pulled all the extra decorations and earring posts off. Then we hung ornament crystal letters in our monogram letters. We found ours at Bombay which is now going out of business but stuff like that will be much easier to find closer to Christmas. I know before the wedding Michael's had some pearl letters in the dollar bin that would have looked nice too.
