I finished my Gretel beret!

Mine's the slouchy version. The pattern called for 230 yards, but I managed to get away with one skein of Cascade 220. Only thing that annoys me is holy MOLY does this yarn bleed! It got dye on my hands, and then I went to type on my white Macbook and now some of my keys have a rosey tint. Arrrgghh!  Angry

This beret is so cute though that I think it might be worth it:

I also recommend blocking this beret over a dinner plate. When I first finished it, it looked like a giant sea creature that was trying to suck my brain out of my skull. Blocking it gave it a lovely shape.

Overall, a really great pattern and I had so much fun knitting this, despite Cascade 220's attempts to tint my world red. I'd recommend this for anyone who wanted to try getting fancy with their cabling.

Thanks for looking!

Looks lovely, I love the colour! That's a great idea to use a dinner plate to block slouchy hats. Ysolda's patterns all look so lovely, but they're a little too advanced for me yet, heehee.

You'll get there! The cabling on Gretel actually isn't that hard to do, but the fact that I've done cables before definitely helped.

And yes, her beret patterns are awesome. I think I might do Estella in pumpkin orange and cobalt blue next.

It looks really pretty. The color suits you very much. I can't believe it left your fingers pink.... but really, I do think it was worth it.

Don't say that! I am working on gretel right now and it is my first time doing cables and my second hat  Tongue

Caribou, it looks great! aaaand you can always knit more in different colours with a yarn that won't bleed  Grin

This was only my second hat too! I love knitted hats, I just don't knit them as often as I really should.

Ysolda recommending using Grumperina's tutorial for cabling without a cable needle, but I didn't really like that. It was easier for me to use a cabling needle because then I could remember if I needed to do a front twist or a back twist next.

The cabling on this project is super fun though. Good luck!!

lovely hat Smiley and you look good in it too Smiley

maybe if you wash it several times it would stop bleeding...

i agree with dyingsockgirl - you can always knit more with different yarns ;P

i have never made a hat...  i can only make scarves... hats seem to be too difficult for me Sad
