so lots of people are talking about getting a domain with their business name. that's just a dot com web site, right?

A domain is just the address, you then need to have hosting to make the website.

You can buy the domain just so its "yours" and no one else can grab it without it being hosted anywhere.

Domains can be .com .net .org etc etc
