so my friend gave me his favorite quarter [weird i know, its how we are] and was like "what are you going to make out of it?" and i was just "uhh idk? prob drill a hole in it and make a necklace?" to which he replied "why not cut it in half and make those things where each person has half?"

and I thought that would be a really cute idea, basically becuase it's something we can always have to remind us of each other, like when we go to college or w/e.

so how does one go about splitting a quarter down the middle?

It absolutely is NOT illegal.  Have you never seen coin jewelry before?  Why, some of it is even offered by the Federal government.

My friend once used a pair of those "heavy duty" scissors. The kind that had commercials where someone cut a penny in half..it really worked!

A vice and a hacksaw, place half the quarter in the vice and cut off the half sticking out.

If you are in the US or UK it isn't illegal, if you are in Canada it is.  I have no idea about other countries, however for personal use (as in you're not going to be selling this) I'm sure it won't be an issue.

I would use a jeweler's saw, and make a pattern for the cut so that the quarter pieces were interlocking, instead of straight. Like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

It is illegal only if you are altering it to appear to be different money - like taking a corner from a $20 bill and pasting it on the corner of a $1. This is a counterfeiting law.
