I made this Devo costume using a 1990's Butterick pattern for NASCAR jumpsuits. It has velcro going all the way up the front closure and an elastic waist. Perfectly comfy for Halloween partying. The letters were cut out of felt and then handstitched on. I'm really thrilled with how it all came out. Smiley

Here's the reference shot. Please note that they aren't wearing the iconic red hats. We got a couple comments about that at the party. Tongue -- (BTW - not hotlinked!)

And here's the copy-cat version

And a close-up. Yeah, we should have thought of other poses. C isn't good with the vogue-ing. Oh well...

And finally, the pattern:

Yikes! This takes me right back to those golden days of my youth! I love it, and yet, I find it appropriately frightening too.

I love Devo! I was going to go as Devo this year but I decided not to.I would never have gone that far though, I'm a quick costume maker.

Yours is absolutely fantastic!

Just one question- where is his energydome?!

omg I <3.

Love the art in the bg too.

Also, my dad dressed up as these guys when he and they were in their prime... and he had the red "whip it" hat.

Great job!  I'm very impressed that you sewed those completely from a pattern.  Sewing clothing is way too complicated for me.

Next year you can change the lettering and he can go as a NASCAR driver!  Smiley

Yeah, the energydome, or the "red whip it hat" as it's also known Wink, actually doesn't go with this outfit -- according to my boyfriend. It goes with a different one that they wore in the 1980s. However, I have noticed that now that Devo has gotten back together they are mixing the energydomes with their yellow uniforms.

Just one of those things where you try to be historically acturate but it's not what people think of as the familar picture, eh? Oh well. I asked if he if wanted me to make one and he said nope. Smiley

IamSusie - hah! Pretty sure that NASCAR is out for C. He's already thinking he wants to be Col. Sanders next year Cheesy I'm not sewing him a suit though!
