So my husband put in an order for two poppets for my daughters Christmas present. He has made me turn down sewing other things for other people he said sewing her these is more important. I love him enthusiasm.

A roomful of Poppets, lucky girl. And love the cat poppet and the Blood Elf is cute too. I have supplies and pattern, just scared to go. I don't sew well at all.  Wink

I know this question has been asked before but I don't see any recent replies - I'm in the uk and alova suede is nigh-on impossible to find over here, plus I'd like to finish a poppet in time for Christmas so waiting for shipping is not ideal. Does anyone have any ideas about what fabric is best to use that is available in the uk? I know I ideally need a knitted microsuede with a minimal, one-way stretch, but I also live on the Welsh coast and I can't really go and stretch-test the fabrics I'm contemplating! So if anyone has any brand names that would be incredibly helpful... (Also, been a member since 2007 and this is my first post, how odd is that?)

I'm not from the UK so I can't help with brand names, but I know people have had success with fleece.

Yes - I may try fleece if I can't come up with anything else, but ideally I'd like that lovely tactile feel you get with microsuede - plus I want to paint the fabric, which wont really work with fleece. Thanks for the tip though, I may well end up using fleece if it comes down to it, better a non-ideal fabric than no poppet at all!

perhaps its called suedette? Suedette looks right, but you would have to ask the store about its construction.

Well, I have bought a couple of different types of suede fabric, one described as stretch suedette, one woven microsuede so it must have some stretch to it, and I shall keep you guys posted on how they turn out.

If you use the woven microsude, make sure you make the seam allowances larger and then clip the curves.  I've used that before, and it tore apart on the smaller, more delicate areas.
