I've used sweatshirt material and a knit and haven't had much trouble with making poppets out of them. I've made one that's waiting for clothes out of fabric I thought was knit but it more of a woven. It did fray a bit when I was stitching the body pieces closed, but it was a poppet for me so I just put a bit of glue over the seams to keep the stitching from coming loose.

As for eyes, you could paint them on as well. I made a cloth faery once that had painted eyes.

you can use metal buttons that are "mushroom" shaped. And I'd say give fleece a try or a cotton with a  lot of stretch. most stretch at least on an angle so try playing with them and seeing what you have.

I bought this weird bold of fabric that's 5 yards long that has stretch and doesn't appear to be woven, I bought it because:
1: It was pretty
2: It was 5 dollars for 5 yards
3: I'd never owned that much fabric of one type before
4: I was thinking of using it to make a dress and a hat

Well, it's grey so it won't be exactly the right color for one poppet I may do, but it'll do in a pinch, and then also I can use it for other poppets ^_^ That and I may sadly test my luck with fabric that looks like it's less fray-ish but has potential to very slightly fray... I can fabric glue it like kmichele did.

I will experiment. ^_^

does it stretch a lot?  if it's really stretchy it wont hold the shape right when you stuff it.

i used a tee shirt like material when I was testing making a poppet...they come out funny shaped when stuffed.
I used extra eyes (plain black or some I have tons of) and I use those for joints.

Crud... The weird grey fabric could actually have too much stretch D: I'm not sure... I'll have to go stretch it later T_T

And I ordered eyes and buttons, so I'm semi set I hope ^_^

Here's the poppet I made with the Elenore tutorialEr, I mean, pattern. Wink Her name's Midna.  Cheesy

Front view.

Back view. I know she looks drunk here, but she isn't. It's just the angle. Isn't she lovely? I'm proud of her.  Cheesy The dress was made with a pattern I just threw together. She is in dire need of more clothes though, as winter is coming. The material I used for her was this pretty but old sheet we had lying about. I used some of that in my quilt too. I know her ears are a little funky too, but that is okay.
