My husband and I are HUGE scifi nerds. One day I was sitting around bored out of my mind with no projects to make. He challenged me to make a stuffed Shai Hulud. This is the giant sand worm from the epic book series DUNE by Frank Herbert. His mouth is the triple open jaw (book canon, not movie). His mouth actually goes down about 12 inches with three rows of teeth. I originally had a sachet of cinnamon inside so he would even smell like Spice. That idea was short lived. The ground cinnamon started to leak through the fabric and leave marks. The Old Man Of The Desert now resides on my side chair ready to swallow any Harkonen who sit there.

This is just ridiculously awesome, haha!  I had to show my boyfriend.

And, I have an idea for your cinnamon sachet problem- what if you used cinnamon sticks or chips instead?

I don't know much about DUNE, but I thought it was funny that I saw your post right before I watched the show, "Chuck", tonight.  In the episode, Chuck and his friend dress up like Shai Hulud!  Now that I know what it looks like, I can say you did a great job re-creating it!   Grin

Thanks everybody! I'm glad you all enjoyed.

I hadn't thought about the Sarlaac. It makes me want to find a Boba Fett to shove down its throat. Oh, but then Boba would blow him up from the inside and get guts all over my living room.... Maybe not such a good idea.

My bf is now insisting I find out how to make one. We are both huge Dune fans. I'm not much of a sewer, I don't think I could figure it out just from the picture, any chance of a tut?

I kinda winged it through the whole thing. But if you give me a week or so tho find the paper pattern and notes I took I may be able to give you some basic instructions.

Yeah I read that first suggestion, hit my head and mummbled somthing about the fact the cinnamon doesn't just come in powder huh. Sometimes I'm so blonde. I will have to see if the grocery here puts them on sale at x-mas time cause that would eb perfect.

Dune swap  would be killer. Once I get a few more swaps under my belt I would even think about organizing.

I've been reading the series since high school. I was so thrilled when Brian Herbert took over for his father and wrote the prequels. My husband and I were working at the bookstore when the first came out in paperback. He called me back to receiving to watch him open the box. I got the first copy from our store. It was one of those sweet things that only we as geeks could appreciate.

Anyone who even thought about making one of these, let alone actually pulling it off, is way cool in my book! Hooray for geeks!!

But we have flamethrowers. And what this indicates to me, it means that at some point, some person said to himself, "Gee, I sure would like to set those people on fire over there. But I'm way too far away to get the job done. If only I had something that would throw flame on them."

I just love your "little maker!" It's so cute and totally inspired. I'm always so psyched to see people craft their love of Dune.  Cheesy

{As a Dune-junkie (read 'em all, a few times), I was in the process of making a Fremen poppet... I may just have to make her a little worm, now... and a vial of the water of life.  Grin }
