This year my husband and I dressed up as the Yip Yip Martians from Sesame Street. We both made our own costumes from scratch. I searched high and low on the internet for a tutorial for how to make these costumes, since there were quite a few pictures and videos online, but alas, nobody shared how to make them, so we eventually figured it out on our own.

Here is the finished product! I'm on the right! (The pink one!)

The fabric is called eyelash fabric. It was perfect for this project, even though it was a little heavy and hard to work with in the sewing machine. The eyes are made of Styrofoam balls connected with wooden kabob skewers and glue. Antennas are made from pipe cleaners and pom poms. The eyes are attached to a headband on the inside of the fabric with two screws. It held up pretty well! The movable mouth is a coat hanger sewn into the fabric, and the rest of the mouth/face screen is layered black mesh-like fabric. The hardest part of the whole thing was attaching the mouth/face screen. We put everything together and THEN tried sewing it on. It would have probably made more sense to do the mouth first, then the rest of it, then there would have been less fabric to work with/swear at! I had originally sewn on some sleeves because we were going to be carving pumpkins, but I took mine off because it added extra weight to the costume and it was already heavy/hot enough! I just left holes for my arms. My husband left his sleeves on his costume. I also had more layers of the black mesh than he did, which is why his face is more visible than mine.

I'm really happy with how it turned out! The reaction we got from our friends was worth all of the hard work! This costume will be hard to top next year!!

Those are SO fabulous - it makes me want to run out right now and buy fabric and make some!  (and I have no need for a costume this year - not to mention no free time - I still want one!)  They look absolutely perfect.  Just love 'em.

When you say you joined the eyeballs with skewers - did you mean to each other?  And then they were screwed through the fabric to the headband?

It's not that I don't want to swap, it's that I often don't have time.  But feel free to ask (especially if it's one that's not too time consuming).

OMG! This is one of the best costumes ever! How long did it take for you to makes these? I cant wait to post what I made for my daughter, its a huge eyeball w/ green slime. I almost used the eyelash material also for her costume but it seemed to be very difficult to sew with so I went with something else. You are very brave!

You are my hero.  The aliens have always been my favourite sesame street characters - so much so that I constantly act out their skits at my children and my nephews, much to their dismay.  These costumes rock my world.

But we have flamethrowers. And what this indicates to me, it means that at some point, some person said to himself, "Gee, I sure would like to set those people on fire over there. But I'm way too far away to get the job done. If only I had something that would throw flame on them."
